All you need to know about Modified Atmosphere storage of grain and seeds.
Each year, about 1 million tons of food grains and seeds (mostly cereals) and seeds are lost in Europe (including Russia) during the post-harvest phase, representing a value of 130 million Euros (Gustavsson et al, 2011). These losses occur mostly during long term storage without implementation of control solutions.
Seeds can be damaged by different biological organisms: fungi (mould growth which induces grain heating), insect pests, but also by poor storage conditions that affect the germination capacity: excess of temperature and/or humidity. To limit the risks of grain and seed deterioration during long-term storage, it is essential to maintain the deterioration factors at risk-free levels through the rigorous application of good storage practices (GSP).
