Hermetically sealed storage of perfectly sound grains and seeds is not likely to cause any deterioration during long-term storage, provided that the "safety" moisture content and temperature of the storage facility conform to good practice (see above). Under these conditions, cereals and pulses can be safely stored without having to cool them to temperatures below the weevil's thermal development threshold. This can lead to energy savings to power cooling systems or to avoid permanent storage in cold rooms.
However, storage buildings need to be particularly well insulated and/or ventilated (at night) to cushion high temperatures in summer and early autumn (so that the daily average does not exceed 22°C).
For oilseeds, this practice can be applied to preserve technological quality. For seeds, the recommended maximum temperature for airtight storage is 20°C, for optimum conservation of germination capacity and vigor.
